Bud Dupree, who tied for the Atlanta Falcons’ team lead with 6.5 sacks in 2023, officially re-signed with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday, the team confirmed.
The 32-year-old edge rusher agreed to a one-year contract worth $6 million, according to insider Ian Rapoport. Dupree was originally a first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2015 NFL Draft and spent six seasons with the team. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Dupree tallied impressive career numbers, including over 230 tackles, nearly 40 sacks, multiple forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown.
In his first season with the Chargers in 2024, Bud Dupree proved to be a key veteran presence. He appeared in all 18 games, including the postseason, and matched the team’s second-best sack total with six. He also intercepted a pass, placing him among the few NFL defenders in 2024 to record both six sacks and a pick. Additionally, he contributed several quarterback hits and pass breakups, showcasing his disruptive ability on defense.
Hailing from Macon, Georgia, Dupree played college football at Kentucky before entering the NFL. He became a consistent starter for the Steelers in his later years, highlighted by a strong 2019-2020 stretch with nearly 20 sacks.
The Chargers will look to Dupree, alongside Khalil Mack, to strengthen their pass rush as they push for a deeper playoff run in the coming season. Building chemistry and refining defensive strategies during the offseason will be critical for the team’s success.
Bringing Dupree back offers the Chargers valuable depth and experience on the defensive line, especially following the departure of star pass rusher Joey Bosa. The team aims to leverage this veteran talent to finally advance past the playoff hurdles that have challenged them in recent years.
He initially signed with Los Angeles ahead of the 2024 campaign, adapting to a new system under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Over 17 games, he made 28 tackles and added six sacks, making a strong case for his return.
With this latest contract, Dupree will have played at least two seasons with every team on his resume except for the Falcons. His one season in Atlanta last year was hampered by scheme changes and limited production, although the Chargers managed to secure a narrow win in their matchup that year.
The Falcons and Chargers do not have a scheduled meeting in the 2025 NFL regular season.
