In a heartbreaking development, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva tragically lost their lives in a car crash in Spain early Thursday morning.
Authorities in Spain confirmed the identities of the two victims after a Lamborghini carrying them veered off the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, close to Zamora in the northwest of the country. The vehicle reportedly overturned and was engulfed in flames just after midnight local time. Emergency crews responded swiftly but were unable to rescue the passengers. Officials verified the brothers’ identities through the vehicle’s license plate.
Jota, 28, was reportedly traveling toward Santander to board an overnight ferry back to the United Kingdom. Due to a recent lung procedure, he was instructed not to travel by air. He was making his way back in time for Liverpool’s pre-season preparations, which were set to commence on Monday.
Just eleven days before the fatal incident, Jota celebrated his wedding with longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto. In a moving Instagram post, he described it as “a day we will never forget.” Rute, the mother of their three children, also shared heartfelt images from the ceremony just one day prior to the tragedy.
Video footage shared by Spanish media shows the burned wreckage of the supercar resting by the roadside, with visible tire marks and damaged guardrails nearby. Investigators believe a blown tire during an overtaking maneuver may have led to the crash.
Jota had recently returned from international duty, having helped Portugal secure victory in the Nations League final against Spain in Munich on June 8. The accident occurred while he was on a short summer break before rejoining Liverpool.
Messages of sympathy have been shared throughout the global football community. Prince William, President of the Football Association, expressed his sorrow and extended thoughts to Jota’s family and loved ones. Cristiano Ronaldo, who shared Portugal’s Nations League triumph with Jota, expressed disbelief, stating, “This makes no sense. We will all miss you.”
Jota’s final social media post, shared less than 24 hours before his passing, featured highlights from his wedding and a touching note about his love for his wife. He called himself “the luckiest man alive.”
