For the first time in nearly a decade, the United States and Guatemala are set to face each other in a competitive fixture—this time with a place in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final on the line. The two teams will clash in a much-anticipated semifinal match on Wednesday, July 2, with kickoff at 7 p.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app.
The last meeting between the U.S. and Guatemala came during the 2016 World Cup qualifiers, where both nations won on home soil. Out of their previous 23 encounters, the United States has lost only once, posting a record of 16 wins, 6 draws, and 1 defeat.
Even more impressively, the USMNT has never lost a home game against Guatemala, winning 14 of 15 matches. The only exception came in a 2007 friendly that ended in a draw.
Despite needing six rounds of penalties to edge past Costa Rica in the quarterfinals, the USA remains heavy favorites heading into this match. The oddsmakers give them an 80.4% chance to advance, while Guatemala looks to shock the region with an upset.
The U.S. is aiming for its eighth Gold Cup title and continues to rely on a balanced squad filled with young talent. Midfielder Malik Tillman has been particularly influential, with three goals and one assist so far. He’s expected to line up with Diego Luna and Sebastian Berhalter in midfield, while Patrick Agyemang leads the line up front.
Left-back Max Arfsten, who contributed a goal and an assist in the quarterfinal, is set to retain his starting role. Goalkeeper Matt Freese was a shootout hero with three saves against Costa Rica and is expected to start again.
Guatemala enters the semifinal with confidence and hunger, having exceeded expectations throughout the tournament. They’ll be looking to contain USA’s wide attacks and strike on the counter. Their defensive setup will be crucial in keeping the scoreline close.
USA Over 6.5 Total Corners
Predicted Score: USA 4-1 Guatemala
While Guatemala has shown resilience and heart throughout the competition, the USA’s depth, attacking structure, and tournament experience are likely to be the deciding factors. Expect Guatemala to hang on early, but the U.S. should take control by halftime and cruise to victory in regulation.
The USA heads into this clash as overwhelming favorites, backed by history, form, and talent. However, Guatemala is no stranger to the underdog role and will look to cause a regional shocker. If the USMNT plays with discipline and sharpness, expect them to book their spot in the final with confidence.
