The Chicago Cubs delivered an offensive explosion at Wrigley Field on Friday, setting a new club record with eight home runs in a single game and cruising past the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-3. Michael Busch delivered a standout performance, hitting three home runs and finishing 4-for-4 with five runs batted in.
Pete Crow-Armstrong also had a stellar showing, going 4-for-4 with two home runs of his own. Dansby Swanson chipped in with a two-run blast to fuel the Cubs’ fourth consecutive win in front of an electrified crowd of 40,038.
Busch’s second home run slammed into the right-field video board shortly after Crow-Armstrong had already reached it, adding to a fireworks display that began well before sunset. This marked Busch’s first career game with three homers and his second multi-home run game. He’s now batting .288 on the season after being traded from the Dodgers earlier this year.
The Cubs now sit atop the NL Central with a 53-35 record, aiming to contend for their first World Series title since 2016. Meanwhile, the Cardinals slipped to 47-42, holding third place in the division.
Saturday’s rematch is set for a 2:20 p.m. ET start. Drew Pomeranz, boasting a 0.00 ERA since joining Chicago from Seattle, will get the nod. St. Louis will counter with left-hander Matthew Liberatore, who enters with a 6-6 record and 3.70 ERA.
Colin Rea (6-3) was sharp on the hill for Chicago, surrendering only one hit over 6 2/3 innings, while St. Louis starter Miles Mikolas (4-6) had a tough outing, allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs through six frames.
Chicago wasted no time setting the tone—Seiya Suzuki launched his 24th homer of the season in the first inning, followed immediately by Crow-Armstrong’s first of the night. The second inning saw back-to-back homers from Busch and Kelly, marking the Cubs’ ninth set of consecutive home runs this season.
The power surge continued in the third as Crow-Armstrong crushed his 23rd homer of the year, and Busch followed up with a two-run shot after a Swanson single, further extending the lead to 7-0.
The Cubs’ historic power display and Busch’s career night will be remembered as one of the highlights of their 2025 campaign.
