San Diego Padres star Manny Machado added another historic chapter to his career Monday night by recording his 2,000th Major League hit during a matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Fans at Petco Park stood to their feet, giving Machado a warm ovation as he reached a feat accomplished by only a select group of players before the age of 33. The Padres’ veteran expressed his appreciation for the support, noting the moment was made even more special by achieving it at home.
Machado had already picked up his 1,999th hit earlier in the night with a clean single in the first inning. He later launched a home run in the eighth, his 15th of the season and the 357th of his career, wrapping up a memorable three-hit performance despite San Diego falling short in a 6-3 defeat.
His latest achievement places him in rare company. According to MLB stats, he’s now only the 12th player in league history to compile both 2,000 hits and over 350 home runs before turning 33. That list includes all-time legends and some of the game’s most iconic sluggers.
Machado, known for his reliability and power at the plate, continues to show the durability that’s been the hallmark of his career. Over the past eight seasons, he’s averaged well over 100 hits annually and consistently delivered home run power, even during shortened seasons.
Since debuting with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012, Machado has compiled an impressive track record. He recorded 977 hits with Baltimore before a midseason move to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018, where he added 73 more. After signing with the Padres in early 2019, he’s tallied another 950 hits in San Diego colors—ranking him among the top five in franchise history.
With his current pace and production, milestones like 3,000 career hits or 500 home runs are well within reach. Already selected as the starting third baseman for the National League All-Star team this season, Machado’s numbers and leadership continue to anchor the Padres lineup.
While San Diego didn’t walk away with the win on Monday, the night still belonged to Machado—a player whose career trajectory remains pointed toward greatness.
